I really enjoyed learning on the job. Putting what we had learnt into practice straight away was definitely most beneficial for me.

What do you love about working with students?

So many things! There are two majors for me though. One would be seeing their growth. It’s so awesome watching students achieve things they never thought they could, and seeing how proud they are of themselves. The second would be the laughs. Students make me laugh every single day, mostly at myself, and it’s definitely one of the highlights.

What was the Teach First NZ style of employment-based training like for you?

I really enjoyed learning on the job. Putting what we had learnt into practice straight away was definitely most beneficial for me. I don’t think I could have coped with learning content one year and then trying to apply it by myself the next. I was also supported by an amazing school department who never let me feel lost. Having assessments during the year did get a little challenging at times, but all assessments were focused on what was happening in our classrooms. That structure made the content and theories more relevant and, for me, easier to understand. Not going to lie, getting paid while studying is definitely a bonus!

What kind of person do you believe is suited to this mahi?

Someone who is passionate about youth and education! A person who wants to help students thrive and succeed. Someone who can make all students believe they can succeed, and not be afraid to reinvent and do things differently, if that is what is going to help their learners. Someone who understands that there is no “one size fits all” approach to teaching!
