Thinking about applying for an internship? Or accepted an internship position - read this article for six top tips!

Be confident

This is an opportunity for you to learn, be bold and ask questions. You are not expected to know everything and your employer is there to help. Introduce yourself to everyone in your team or department. Try to have contact with each person and get a understanding of what they do day to day.

Be professional

Learn about the dress code before you start your internship – and then keep to it. Even if there are no guidelines, just watch what other people are wearing and dress accordingly. What you wear can reflect your attitude and the more professional it comes across the better. For example no shorts!

Be organized

Don’t be late for work or meetings. Arriving a few minutes early is a great way to start your day organized. Diarize your deadlines and be prepared. If you need help meeting those, ask your team mates. Being organized and tracking time are important skills in any work place.

Be proactive

Employers generally love people who show initiative. If you aren’t busy don’t just sit at your desk, let someone know. If you think there is a task that you could help with, ask your team mate if they need assistance.

Be enthusiastic

Being an intern means enthusiastic about admin tasks that might not be as fun. In saying that if you do these well, better things will come. See theses tasks as learning the process and do not complain about them. Everyone has to do a bit of admin.

Be social

Your internship is a perfect time for you to network with your cohort and other employees. If you had to relocate for your internship you co-workers are your best bet on finding out the good cafes, gyms and restaurants.
